The Hojo Mandala

Gokurakuji Temple

Origins of Gokurakuji Temple

In 1259, Shigetoki, the third son of Hojo Yoshitoki, started construction within his estate to show the vision of the Pure Land. Although Shigetoki became an assistant to the regent, he was not particularly attached to politics. He died in 1261, halfway through the construction. His sons Nagatoki and Naritoki followed their father's wishes and completed what is now the only temple of the Shingon sect in Kamakura.
